What Does “Passed Out” Mean? Be Careful in English

“Passed out” is a phrase that can easily confuse people. Depending on who you are talking to, it can mean something very different from what you planned to say.

Meanings of “passed out”

  • Lost consciousness: “He passed out because of the heat.” This is the most common meaning in everyday English.
  • Handed out: “The teacher passed out the exam papers.”
  • Graduated: In India, many people say “I passed out of college in 2018.” This use is common in Indian English.

Why it can confuse listeners

In many other English-speaking countries, someone who hears “I passed out in 2018” may think you fainted. In an interview or an international meeting, a clearer phrase avoids that confusion.

Clearer alternatives

  • “I graduated in 2018.”
  • “I completed my degree in 2018.”
  • “I finished college in 2018.”

Practise it

Change these sentences to be clearer: “I passed out from B.Com in 2020.” “She passed out from the same college.” Say the new versions aloud two or three times.
