How to Answer “Tell Me About Yourself” in an English Interview

“Tell me about yourself” is often the first question in an interview. Many candidates read out their whole life story or repeat their CV. A short, clear structure works much better.

The 3-part answer: present, past, future

  • Present: who you are now. Your current role, studies or area of work.
  • Past: one or two experiences or skills that prepared you for this job.
  • Future: why you want this role and what you hope to do next.

A simple template

“I am currently a ______. I have experience in ______ and I enjoy ______. Earlier, I worked on ______, which helped me learn ______. Now I am looking for a role in ______ where I can ______.”

Tips to sound confident

  • Keep it to about 60 to 90 seconds.
  • Choose details that match the job. Do not list everything.
  • Do not memorise word by word. Practise the points and say them in your own words.
  • End with why this role is the right next step for you.

Practise it

Write your three parts in one short sentence each. Then say the full answer aloud and record yourself once. Listen for places where you stop or repeat words.
